Cialis is used to treat erectile dysfunction and benign prostatic hyperplasia. It works by inhibiting phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), which increases blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation and helps relax smooth muscle in the prostate and bladder.
The usual dose for erectile dysfunction as needed is 10 mg before sexual activity, with a typical range of 5–20 mg. For daily use, the usual dose is 2.5–5 mg once daily. For BPH, the usual dose is 5 mg once daily.
The form of administration is an oral tablet. In some markets it is also available as orally disintegrating tablets or oral jelly.
The effect usually begins in about 30–60 minutes after taking it.
The duration of action is up to 36 hours.
Do not drink excessive alcohol, because it can increase the risk of side effects such as dizziness, low blood pressure, and reduced erectile response.
The most common side effects are headache, indigestion, back pain, muscle aches, flushing, nasal congestion, and pain in the limbs.
